Dear Ferries of Penang, You Will Be Missed!

Before 2020 ends, here's a really sad news for all Penangites.
The hallmark of 126 years...is no longer in service in 2021 onwards.
I don't know what to say, this is really heart breaking.

30th December, mum and I decided to go for one last ride...
After our classic breakfast, kopi and wan tan mee,
we headed to the port for the last ferry ride.

Yes, our historical ferry service.
Even the iconic footbridge is no longer around after an incident.

Life has changed a lot in decades,
but this port and bus station means so much to everyone.

It is always there even when I was just a kid.
We travelled from Kedah to Penang, ferry ride is a must.
Mum brought us along,
I swear it is a memorable one.

When the shop lots were occupied...
Now most of them are empty.

The happy walkway.

And the colourful and sour smell of jeruk~

When the service is terminated, this port will not be in function anymore.
I guess?
This port, with all the people in and out everyday...

Smell of the sea breeze...
This is where we said our last goodbye...

And ofcourse, cars and motorbikes!

No longer with car and motorbikes...

So there were a lot of people like us, trying to take the last ride.

This will be missed!

My heart felt the pain of losing the ferry service,
disappointed as well.

But the business is not as good as before,
while the maintenance fees are really high.

Perhaps, changes are good?

When you are about to lose it,
only you will realise the value of it.

It is a mixed feeling for me.
What about you?

New service announcement,
not sure I like the new boat or not.

One last look of the waiting hall of the port...

As people come,
people go as well.

Here's my one last ride.

Mum said: Let it be.
Memories will be treasured.

Favourite corner when I was small,
because of the junk food!

Thank you for the service, Sir!

Taking off~

Hey! You look cool.

Leaving the port and here we go!

Mum and her half day trip to mainland, haha!

Reminiscing the good old times...

Indeed, ferry ride carries not only human but also their dreams.

Took this panorama view and ops!
Toilet view is included~

Me and my one last ride,
I m going to miss this a lot!
>.<

Thanks for suggesting this.

There were quite a few people who are like us,
just to take the last ride on this day.

Life goes on?

Nope, life happens in this ferry.
Everyone has their own story about ferries.

Mine is a journey to go home.

126 years, thank you for the service.

And I always wonder about the life jackets on top ever since I was a kid.

Then we saw the new boats....
Hmm, not excited about it.

Here we arrived, Penang Sentral~

Off the boat, and this uncle was totally like us!
Just to keep the sweet memories in photographs~

Entrance~

Old school ferries that are left behind...
Maybe can turn them into a cafe?

So our journey at Penang Sentral was a simple one,
few drinks and toilet break.
Then off we go, back to the ferry to go home~

I can't help but feeling sad inside...
I am hoping for some good news,
maybe like transforming these ferries into something else,
so that we can visit again.

I do hope that we can still visit one day.

Because this is a part of Penang's heritage.

One peaceful ride with mum,
I am really glad that we actually made time to do this.

The wind and sound and waves...

Not forgetting how the seawater has changed in colour and marine debris floating around...

And also the classic green floor~

Rusty, because they were in rain and under sun...

What a sad day...
everyone felt the same I think.

And it was quite a quick ride...

And we arrived...

Back to this lonely but happy walk way...

We spent quite a long time today, mission accomplished.

Who knows what will happen after this?

How their life is going to change?
Their life is here!

Even the siu bao (pork delicacy) is no longer available due to halal issue.
It used to be our must buy when we come to the port.
Well, though I no longer consume meat.
Haha, life has really changed.

But dear Ferries,
You are awesome!
I have faith, that this is not the end yet!
Penang will not let you go.
We are not happy but we will try something for sure.
Let's pray and hope for the best.

Last but not least,
Thank you for the service,
our unsung heroes.
You did great.
